Capstone Project

For my Capstone project I have choreographed a duet called "Letting You Walk". My dancers for this duet are Annemari Olmeda and Kenny Banda. I chose these dancers because I love the way they use their facial expressions while dancing. My piece is all about being dramatic and showing emotion to show what's going, and the dancers I chose do that exact thing,

"Letting You Walk" is the piece I choreographed for my Capstone project. This is a studio performance and will soon be performed on stage at our Spring concert. My theme for the piece is about learning to let go. I came up with this theme thinking about how one of my dancers is a senior and the other is a junior and who doesn't want to see her senior friends move on. The song I chose is called "Lovely" by Brian Catuccio. I chose this song because the song has a lot of highs and lows just like the story I am telling through this piece. I also chose my theme by thinking about my own experience. I am a person who also has a hard time of letting go of things when they are meant to go, and I think other people can relate to this. In my piece I wanted to show movements that demonstrate that they both wanted to stay like in the beginning where they both reach out for each other. These two dancers go through a lot of highs and lows throughout the piece, and they are telling the story that led up to Annemari having to let go. I think that is mostly what happens when a person doesn't want to let go. They go through moments where they feel like that person will stay and then get disappointed when they are let down. In the end it shows Kenny getting up to make Annemari think they want to stay and she reaches out for her, but Kenny walks away. Annemari finally lets Kenny walk away.

Once I came up with my theme, I started improvising to my music. I thought about how my music contains highs and lows. I knew that when those moments hit that I wanted the dancers to demonstrate either wanting to stay or wanting to leave. I wanted to show one dancer fighting for the friendship so I added movements like pulling together to show that. I also added partner work to show that these dancers had a good relationship. My dancers also contributed to adding movements or ideas for my piece.  I look forward to putting my dancers in costumes and lighting the piece for our upcoming Spring concert. I am satisfied with the level of performance, and the way they are showing emotion throughout the piece.
